ok Im officially less creeped out by her now, she honestly just needs sarah as a genuine friend and sarah is a strong enough girl to be one even if she gets teased for doing so.

This hits a little too close to home. Kids would take advantage of me, too, pretending to be my friend until they got what they wanted from me. Then they'd turn on me, becoming as nasty as everyone else.

I'm not nearly as creeped out by her, either, but I do wish she'd get past that "Oh, wow, you're transgender!" stage.

The problem with being different. Society brainwashing people to conform to standards, and to persecute those who don't.

Me too. They would take advantage, or be too embarrassed by liking the weird kid to stop bullying me when others were around. Thus the "Secret Friends" line.

I'd second that this one feels a little too close to home. For me it wasn't so much the secret friends thing as kids picking on me and being mean (or at least I thought they were).

This is kind of what makes me smile a bit and cringe when I see Molly. Her behavior reminded me a little bit more than is comfortable about my own at times growing up. It drove me to try being "normal" in Jr High and Sr High. That felt a lot like a chain around my neck dragging me down.

I was reluctant to actually ask this, but here goes:

Am I way of the mark in thinking that maybe she's taking Sarah's being transgendered to be sort of a (and please pardon the expression, but...) "Freak like me" kind of thing? That she's latching on to someone who has SOMETHING, some aspect of themselves, that would potentially render then an outcast, as she feels had been?

That could certainly lead to some big time learning and growing experiences for both of them, but it certainly has the potential to be a bit darker than this comic has typically gone. And yes, I do remember the arc in which Sarah was attacked and sent to the hospital (the "I'll Rise" comic towards the end of that was arguably the most uplifting web-comic I've ever read) but a betrayal by a friend or admirer will always cut much deeper that any attack by a known enemy.

What makes you think Molly will betray Sarah? I mean, what is so wrong about trying to find 'freaks like me'? I've been there, as an outcast, trying to find other outcasts, who are usually kinder to me than normal kids? I'm confused by the negativity in your comment.

Her obsession with Sarah being Trans is fetishizing and unhealthy, and Sarah is lapping it up. This is not a friendship- a friendship is not "one person idolizing the other", but that's what they've got. I'm sure Sarah doesn't wish Molly ill, but by allowing Molly to worship her- she's doing Molly no favors. This is not sustainable. Either Sarah is going to realize that Molly's got a very unhealthy view of her, or Molly will realize that it's a very one-sided relationship. They're kids. Even adults would have a hard time addressing this in a mature, healthy way that ends in them staying friends, this is likely going to end badly.

If Sarah realizes that Molly's trans-views aren't good, then Molly may feel rejected and that Sarah is "just jealous" and one of THOSE people and she never should have trusted her. If Molly realizes the friendship is one-sided, she'll feel taken advantage of by Sarah,  realize that Sarah is one of THOSE people and that she never should have trusted her. Maybe "betray" is the wrong word, but this relationship is setting up some VERY badly hurt feelings on both sides.

This is going to take a very delicate touch, but I think Lucy can handle it.

It's quite possible that's what Molly is doing, which is okay. As a child, a friend with whom I felt kinship would have been a gift from heaven for me. However, I haven't seen anything to indicate she would betray Sarah. Are you assuming that because others have used her, Molly would turn around and use Sarah the same way? For all her annoying qualities, Molly seems too nice a kid to do that.

Yeah... I really didn't mean it to sound so negative. I had a really hard time trying to figure out the right way to say it. (I should have kept trying, I guess!) "Betray" was not the right word (too strong) because I wasn't suggesting that Molly was going to turn on Sarah in the SAME WAY that so many appear to have turned on her.  I guess I'm trying to put myself in Sarah's shoes and imagine how she might feel to find out that (and I'm hypothesizing here) her new best friend was only really there because she needed someone who she could feel superior to, someone who she saw as MORE of a freak, someone who she perceived as LOWER on the social totem pole somehow - someone who would then be SAFE.  Now that's not EVIL or anything, it's very rational actually, but no one would like to find out that they are perceived as that "safe" friend for that reason.

Does that make any sense?

In fairness, he's says "potential".

No comment on the speculation, though. ;')

This hits what I was getting right on the head.  In one way, I hope you/re (we're) wrong (about the first part) and in another I hope you're right (about Lucy.)  For my part, at the risk of sounding a little hero-worshipy myself, I'm just glad it's Christine writing it, and can't wait to see where it goes and how we gets there!
