The Princess

To My Beloved Royalty...

No group on earth has a monopoly on hard times, nor on good times. More importantly, no group is made of individuals who have all had the exact same experience. We lose sight of the fact that groups are made up of individuals, each of whom have lived a unique life. Generalizations are, at best, a very crude tool and more frequently, they do great injustice to just about everyone. More on this as the story unfolds.... The painting in the background is El Lazarillo de Tormes by Goya.

Wendy's motives remind me so much of my own mum -.- Although the only reason I don't entirely regret not transitioning as a child is that as an adult I was less effected by her ignorance and more able to have her take what I had to say seriously.  But yeah, good intentions aside, acting in a transphobic way because you don't want your child to suffer from transphobia?  Not really all that logical.

I understand what Wendy means. The label of "gay" carries with it a certain chic these days. Celebrities coming out as gay used to be a big deal--now the announcement is met with a resounding yawn. People *understand* what "gay" is, even if they have a problem with gays.

I think I can safely say, though, that cis people can't get their minds around "transgender", though, because it violates their black and white view of the world. They understand straight/gay and man/woman, but nothing that defies those categories. (I've had people stubbornly insist--INSIST--that I was in fact a gay man, for example). And what they don't understand scares them.

I'm not saying gays don't suffer from bigotry as well. Far from it. But transgendered people, it seems, are where gays were thirty or forty years ago as far as tolerance and understanding.

I get a little squicked any time a parent says "if only my child were..." - your kid is a unique being, they just happen to directly share a biological characteristic or two with you.

AACK! I reread the last sentence of my previous comment, and see that it could be misconstrued. I meant to say "I'm not saying gays aren't VICTIMS OF bigotry as well...."  Sorry about that.

I comic this story so much. I stayed up last night reading well over 300 of the strips. But for some reason, no matter how many times I reload the image or refresh this page, I can't get this one to appear. O^O Oh well, I shall read on! Maybe I'll have better luck in a few days. Smile
